Unhealthy vs Healthy Views of The Future
This week we have been thinking a lot about our future.
I can’t believe that one year ago this week, we had the incredible opportunity to rent this land that we have been living on.
In many ways I feel like we have accomplished and grown so much during this time.
In other ways, I don’t know how much closer we have gotten to our dream of one day building something of our own.
It sometimes feels like an unobtainable dream. Something so far away I see no clear path of how to get there. That realization can often be overwhelming.
And when I’m feeling this way, the joy and gratitude I have for life seems to fade away.
My vision is clouded by anxiety, depression, hopelessness.
I get lost in feelings like we aren’t doing enough, or that we aren’t good enough at what we’re doing.
It drains all of my motivation, leaves me feeling existentially hopeless, and it makes accomplishing even the smallest tasks feel like climbing a mountain.
This is an unhealthy view of future, and it’s not even rooted in something real.
It’s a projection of my insecurities, my lack of confidence, my fear of the future.
What’s even worse, is the more I give in to this feeling, the more it will dictate and bend my future into reflecting these beliefs.
It’s a downward spiral, a slippery slope.
So then, what is a better way to think about our future?
A Healthier Future
I think some might say you should just focus on being present. That is the key to a peaceful life.
Which is not wrong, I believe peace does lie in the present moment. But I don’t think it’s the whole picture, at least not for everybody.
Our ability to project plans far into the future is what made us the most proliferate species on this earth, for better or worse.
We should use that gift to it’s fullest extent, while also remaining present. Despite the paradox in that statement, it is possible.
To do this we must first look into ourselves and discover what is it we truly want out of our time here. What is our vision, dream, or passion?
This can be anything, and it will be unique to every individual. Once you have the vision, make it clear. Articulate exactly what that dream is.
Once we have that idea, we have something to aim at.
Once we have something to aim at, we can begin to align the way we live and the actions we take everyday to align with that future.
It’s within those actions that we can give in to the present.
If we know the actions we are taking in our life everyday align with our vision of the future, then there is no longer a need or desire to keep worrying about the future.
We can bring our focus to the present.
All we need to do is perform those acts to the best of our ability, which always happens when we are being present in them.
There may come a time where those feelings begin to arise again, and we begin to worry about if what we are doing is enough.
In that case, I believe the best thing to do is go back to your vision and reevaluate if something about it has changed.
Our future is a fluid, ever-shifting, infinite web of possibilities. Your vision will change.
In that case, articulate the changes, reassess the actions necessary to move towards it, and get lost in the present moment again.
In my experience this way of perceiving my future has helped me deal with all the uncertainty, anxiety and doubt of following your dreams.
I hope in some way this idea can help you as well.
Journey well friends.
Things I Enjoyed This Week
🎬 Video - Natalie Lynn’s talent continues to amaze me, especially knowing she is in her early 20’s. Her videos are incredibly cinematic, full of emotion and really amazing story telling. This video in particular had me questioning everything I know about visual storytelling(which is not much) and inspired us to keep diving deeper into our own abilities, and our own story.
🎤 Podcast - This podcast between Oliver Anthony and Joe Rogan was a treat. If you don’t know Oliver, he recently went viral with a song “Rich Men North of Richmond” that speaks beautifully about the ever increasing working class struggle and systemic issues of America. It’s full of soul, pain and reminiscent of a kind of artistry that you just don’t find anymore in modern music.
